Case Study: Carol

My film is entered around a lesbian relationship. So I thought it necessary to see how lesbian films are marketed, produced and the nature of a lesbian film.

Carol is about an aspiring photographer that develops an intimate relationship with an older woman. 'A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol, an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband threatens her competence as a mother when Carol's involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.'

The Film was released on the 20th of November 2015 and since then it is had $15.4 million in the Box Office. It is rated 7.6/10 on IMDb, 95% on Meteoritic, 94% on Rotten Tomatos and The Guardian have rated the movie 5/5. It is clear to see that they have done well!!

The film has been marketed in many ways. For example The Guardian had a piece by Rachel Cooke: 'Todd Haynes: 'She said, there's a frock film coming up with Cate attached.. it sounded right up my alley'. The article really promotes the movie as Todd Haynes is interviewed and says that 'it has no lead men' and 'Cate and Rooney are in every single frame'. This is really helping promote not just the movie but the LGBTQ community as a whole. The film is directed by Todd Haynes. The stars of the LGBTQ film are Cate Blanchett and Ronney Mara.

This is the trailer:

After watching this, I wonder, why is it such a big deal that there is a movie that is being made about two women. It is a thing, much like a man and a woman, why does it have to be such a big deal? It is who you love. I think that just because it is two women instead of a man and a woman, it won't change the emotions that we would feel. I guess this is my new generation-self talking but, hey it is just an opinion.

Motion

Yesterday I bought 'Motion' which is a software application produced by Apple Inc for their Mac OS X operating system. It is used to create and edit motion graphics, titling for video production and film production and 2D and 3D compositing for visual effects.

Today in media we were playing around with the application software and made this humorous video. It is just for fun, don't worry my indent will be much better!!!!!

SurveyMonkey

I have created a survey on SurveyMonkey. I have made this because I thought that it would be good to actually see who my target audience actually are and not guess. After reading question 3 in the evaluation I thought that this would help me: 'What have you learnt from your audience feedback?'

I have put a password on the survey which is...

Here is the survey that I made through SurveyMonkey...

Movie Experience: The Theory Of Everything

A new thing I want to incorporate onto my blog are my movie experiences. I would say that I watch about a movie a week, that is if I have the time. So I thought that it would be helpful to look at the different camera shots and identify them, or look at how the editing has been done, or even how the director has changed the lighting to fit the mood. I could go on. I guess you could say this is my New Year's Blogolution ;)

I have just watched The Theory of Everything and may I just say it was amazing!! No wonder Eddie Redmayne won the 'Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role', it was truly amazing. If you have not watched it I would really recommend it. Not only did it bring me to tears, but it made me laugh and really appreciate life.

I movie was directed by James Marsh. He uses many different camera shots that I found very weird. Like the shot was very odd and I would have never have though to use that, it was the scene where Steven Hawking was told to he had motor-neuron disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). I just found it very odd but it worked.

The movie was just amazing and I would recommend it to everyone. Eddie Redmayne performs beautifully and really gets into the character of Steven Hawking.

The movie also won the following awards:

Golden Globe 2015: Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture - Drama (Eddie Redmayne) and Best Original Score - Motion Picture (Johann Johannsson)

BAFTA Awards 2015: Alexander Korda Award for Best British Film and BAFTA Film award for: Best Leading Actor (Eddie Redmayne) and Best Adapted Screenplay (Anthony McCarten)

I mean the list goes on and on, but overall they won an amazing 24 awards and they were nominated for 109 overall!!!

Vertigo Films

In this blog I will be looking at what Vertigo Films is and what films they have produced and how well they have done.

Vertigo Films have produced and distributed 65 films, here are just some of the titles...

Vertigo Films is a UK film and distribution company. It was founded by Allan Niblo and James Richardson in 2002. Since then they have made 65 films and added memeers such as Rupert Preston and Nick Love (these two became partners in the company). The Company has produced 28 films and distributed 35. These films range in genre and audiences; they included the box office smash hit Streetdance 3D, the biggest independent Uk DVD of all time The Football Factory and multi award winning Monsters.

In 2013 Vertigo produced Pudsey The Movie (a co-production with Simon Cowell's company Syco). However, much to Simon Cowell's surprise the movie was a big bust!! On Rotten Tomatoes the film did not get a good review at all...

They also produced Monsters: The Dark Continent, which was also a huge disaster. You could say that this was due to the new director Tom Green, however, there is a debate whether due to a lack of marketing the film did not do too well (I will go into this issue in another blog).

However, Vertigo does own a successful post production company in Berlin, The Post Republic and is a partner in sales company Protagonist Pictures with Film 4 and Ingenious.

Section B: Disney Facts

Section B: Institutions and Audiences
"Candidates should be prepared to understand and discuss the processes of production, distribution, marketing and exchange as they relate to contemporary media institutions, as well as the nature of audience consumption and the relationships between audiences and institutions."

To be able to answer a section B question I need to be prepared with facts to help my case. As a result, I have devised a few facts about Disney that will in turn help me compose a good essay.
  • In 2014 consumer products generated a revenue of nearly $4 billion
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) required  (a then-enormous) $1.499 million to produce the movie. However, it turned over a gross of $66 million, before reaching $185 million. Today Snow White has been rated in the box office in 10th place with a total of $885 million.
  • In 2013 Disney Studios exceeded $4 billion in the box office receipts, this was primarily thank to a contribution of $1.215 billion from Iron Man 3 and $744 million from Monster's University.
  • In 2015 Disney made $700 million each from: Captain America" The Winter Soldier, Maleficent and Guardians of the Galaxy.
  • FIRST BILLION: they exceed $1 billion in the global box office receipts from Pirates of the Caribbean" Dead Man's Chest, which reached $1.066 billion in 2006. Since then they have made more, including: Alice in Wonderland ($1.026 billion, 2010), Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.046 billion , 2011), Marvel's The Avengers ($1.519 billion, 2012), Iron Man 3 (1.215 billion, 2013) and
  • ($1.274 billion, 2013)
  • Pixar and Marvel have generated an estimate of nearly $3.4 billion profit for Disney.
  • Disney Infinity (2013) operating profit of $116 million in 2014.
  • Disney World is the company's largest resort, occupying 25,000 acres. It includes 800 campsites, 4 theme parks, 18 resort hotels, 23,000 rooms and 3,000 vacation club units.
  • Disney's largest and most profitable segment is Media Networks, which generated a revenue of $21.2 billion in 2014.
  • Disney's Media Networks not only include Disney Channels, but also: ABC Family, 80% in ESPN, 50% in A&E, The History Channel, Lifetime Movie Network and more...
  • It is predicted that Star Wars: The Force Awakens could make a gross of more that $2 billion worldwide!!!

Star Wars Marketing

Everywhere you look you can see star wars. Advertising, merchandise, interviews, the list goes on. In the led up to the most talked about film of 2015, all types of promotion and marketing have been made to keep the suspense up. In this blog I will show you over 10 different types of marketing that have been used to keep the convocation about Star Wars apparent in day to day life. The star wars saga is nearly 40 years old and has been around of 3 generation. Advertising Age said that "'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Tv Spend at $66 million and Rising".

So many different adverts on the telly have been designed to promote the film. Here are just some of the different ways people have been remained about the release of the film!

Clothes show

On the 5th December my school took us the the Clothes Show 2015, whist we were watching the show a storm trooper came out and started dancing. This was great because it brought about the movie, and reminded people of its realise.

XFactor Final 2015

Alan Carr - Chatty Man

Sky

On Sky there was a Star Wars channel, also there was a whole section just for Star Wars where viewers could watch all the Star Wars Saga at there own disposal for free. This helped with the hype of the movie as the audience was able to watch all the episodes before they watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Interviews

Many Interviews have been taken with the cast of the show. Some of these have aired on the television. This in tern helped people that watch these shows weekly to be reminded about the release of the movie. This interviews were broadcasted all over the world, this is possible because of the mass of money that the production company had to market the film.

Merchandise

Sales of star wars merchandise, ALONE, is excepted to reach up to $1.2-1.5 billion in the 12 months surrounding the film. As star wars have a huge demographic from hard core adult fans to little children wanting to get there hands on a alight saver, it will not be hard at all to each this number. As the film is being so advertised there is not one person that does not know about it's release. This has really helped as it makes the audience have constant reminders of the release of the movie. 15 weeks before the release of the film, disney introduced the star wars merchandise, even though 6/8 weeks is more common. There were so many hard core fans that had not even seen the movie yet, however they still brought all the merchandise, people just love Star Wars. Even though it is a big risk it seems to be working for Disney as they have made an estimated domestic total as of December 31 2015, of $651,965,583. Baring in mind the movie has been out for 14 days!!!
