I watched Star Wars

Image result for star wars 7

Image result for star wars 7I have never actually watched any of the Star Wars movies but I have heard how amazing they are! So I was told by my mum and dad that we were going to watch the movie, so they told me to watch the last episode so tat I would understand it - it helped, a lot!

MAY I JUST SAY STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS WAS AMAZING!

Image result for star wars 7Image result for star wars 7

It was so good, for someone that has not watch it before, it was emotional because of the return of many old characters, and spoiler alert, a surprise death!

Image result for star warsHowever, to be completely honest with you, if I was a super fan and I would have been camping out for days to watch this movie, I think that I would have been disappointed. It was not one of the best movies, apparently (I only watch Star Wars: return of the Jedi), it was not outstandingly amazing, but as a fan of the films I have watched I would watch it again!

When we were ordering the tickets online there were soon many showings, for example there was one at 3:00 in one screen, then another at 3:45 in another screen. That just shows how popular the film is. Meaning they are going to make millions!!

For example on the 29th December (12 days after the release date) there are 19 showing in one day! this shows the popularity of the film, and how well it has actually done because most films don't even get into cinemas!

My Film Opening

Today I filmed the rest of my moving opening. I can say I believe that all went to plan. Now all I have to do is edit the film. During the production of this opening I have encountered many problems; so far all of them have been dealt with. However, another has arisen.

The Hospital, that I choice to film my movie opening in, have proven a problem. The marketing sector have told me that I will be aloud to film in a hospital room if, and only if, it does not go onto any social media website. The Hospital made it clear that if I did post it to my blog or on YouTube, I will suffer serious consequences.

However, there was a light at the end of the, very dark, tunnel. My teacher informed the exam board and told them about the dilemma. They thankfully had a solution. This was to put my film opening on a DVD and send it to them so they can see it. Therefore, it will not be on a social media site. The hospital have also asked if they to can see a copy of the opening for marketing reasons, so I will also make a copy for them.

Here are the emails from my teacher and the exam board...

Filming skills I need to improve on

I was looking through my blog and I came across by preliminary task. As I watched it back it occurred to me that my filming for my 180 rule was incorrect. I know I have already evaluated by preliminary task, but as I am filming in less than a week I found it necessary that I knew how to film and how to improve.

When executing my 180 rule I have to ensure that when I am filming I film on the opposite sides of my actors shoulders or else it looks as if they are looking in the same direction. I made this mistake in my preliminary task, click here to view my video.

Music 2

Here is a little video I put together of my teacher playing my background music for my film opening. The video is a collection of eight pictures, with the music playing in the background.
Hope you enjoy!!

BARB

Today in our lesson we were reading though the text book in the section institutions and audiences. We then finished the section and started answering some questions. The last questions was: 'Who are BARB and what do they do'. So we were asked for homework to look on the website and see what it was all about...

What does BARB stand for?

Broadcasters' Audience Research Board
What is BARB?
"BARB was set up in 1981 to provide the industry standard television audience measurement service for broadcasters and the advertising industry. BARB is owned by BBC, ITV, Channel 4, Channel 5, BSkyB and the IPA (Institute of Practitioners in Advertising) and is a not for profit company limited by guarantee.
BARB commissions research companies to provide the services that our users want, including the production of audience viewing figures. The audience measurement contracts are held by the following companies - RSMB, Ipsos MORI and Kantar Media (formerly known as TNS)."
You can see more of the website here. If you want to know about frequently asked questions click here.

Research:
I found it really interesting to see that most TV ratings have gone down a lot in the past year! However Entertainment seems to be the most popular in both 2014 and 2015.
Six rating in specific genres went up, these where: Arts, Current Affairs, Hobbies/Leisure, Music, News/Weather and Other. It is no suppers that Current Affairs and News/Weather have gone up because we are, now is 2015 November, facing lots of political and economical problems, such as attacks.
However eight genre have decreased in rating, these are: Children's TV, Documentaries, Drama, Education (which is now at 0%), Entertainment, Films, Religious and Sport. I do not find it to be a surprise that Entertainment has decreased, this is because most reality shows are getting to boring and predictable and old really.
Overall, I found it fascinating to look at this website it was great!

Music

I had a dilemma with my music. The exam board have said that we are not aloud to use copyrighted music, so I went on to sound cloud and found the perfect song! However my teacher told me that that could be seen a copyrighted music, meaning I cannot use it. So I had a choice, I could rather find a new song on the website 'freeplay music' or contact the girl that made the song and ask her if it was ok if I could use her song. However, she never replied and I could not find a piece of music that could fit my film opening as well as the song on sound cloud did.

After a week or so looking on the website, it came to my attention that I could get a musician to play a piece of music for me. I have piano lessons and my teacher asked me to find a piece of music that I wanted to play. I was looking on youtube and found the piano piece Nuvole Bianche by Einaudi. I know how to play his other piece I Giorni, however this piece will take me a lot of time to learn and make is perfect. As a rule I asked my GCSE music teacher to perform it for me so that I could it and use it in my film opening.

I record it today and all went to plan. I am very happy with the quality of the piece and I cannot wait to get started on creating my movie opening!!

Children In Need

This year, as we are in year 12 we have to organise all the charity days at school. This is a great task and responsibility to have. As we wanted to make this year fun and exciting, we thought that it would be great idea to make a funny video of our teachers. As the theme was 'A Giant Sleepover' we got all out teachers to get into their pjs and dance!

The reason for my blog is, we made a great video that put our skills to the test, in editing and is filming. I believe it went really well thanks to all the hard work that went into organising it and post production.

Click here to see the video that we produced...

Director

If I had the choice I would choose the director Nick Cassavetes. I admire his work so much because he directed some of my favourite movies. Such as: My Sister's Keeper and The Notebook.

My Sister's Keeper
This movie is really the base of where I got my ideas as the girl in this movie has cancer and the girl in my movie has cancer. It was just a coincidence that Nick Cassavetes directed this movie.

Trailer

The Notebook
Again by coincidence Nick Cassavetes directed another movie that had a big influence on inspiring me to have a couple in love.

Trailer

About Nick Cassavetes
Nick Cassavetes was born in New York City, and he is the son of the actress Gena Rowlands and film director John Cassvetes. As a child he appeared in two movies that his father directed: Husbands (1970) and A Woman Under the Influence (1974). Even though he did this he did not want to go down the route that his parts did, so he attended Syracuse University on a basketball scholarship. However, this career ended because of an injury. So he then attended the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. He has directed several films: John Q, Alpha Dog, She's So Lovely, Unhook the Stars, Th Notebook and My Sister's Keeper.

MY FINISHED STORY BOARD

I was so excited for media because I have a real passion for creating videos and trailers. When I first found out how to make trailers, I did not stop! So this task on actually creating my own film opening, that is just mine and I have made everything up, really appealed to me. The story board just made it feel so real! After creating my story board I am really amazed the work and detail directors go through in making movies. I only created a 2 minute storyboard, some movies last 2 hours.

Harry Potter...
Over the half term I watched all of the Harry Potter films. I understand that this type of genre has nothing to do with the genre I am producing, however, I wanted to see the different types of shots that were compelled into this amazing series. After watching them all, I watched the behind the scene videos on Sky and this showed me the different lengths that directors go to. It amazes me how they find their inspiration and vision. So venturing on to my own visions and inspirations from all the different romantic movies I have watched, I started to story board.

How I began...
I did find it hard to sit at my desk and actually get all the floating ideas in my head on paper, but it got easier. I found it easiest just to close my eyes, imagine being in the scene and how you would act if such horrible news was presented to you. I underestimated the amount of shots I would need. I did not think film would take as long as it is looking like it will. However having all my ideas on paper is so so helpful as know I have a set idea of what it is going to look like.

Video...
I have made a video of what my story board. I have made it on iMovie. I was really impressed with myself as I cropped the music to make the background music fit the length of the video. I did this but cutting the rapping and on verse from the song. I believe it works really well, and I don't think it can be spotted where the edits are. I have also added a part from the middle of the song to the end as I though that it worked well.

Here is my story board!!

Music

I have been storyboarding and it has come to my attention that I am storyboarding for a music video not a movie, and this is not the task. So as a result I have had to scrap the song because I do not think that what I have done can be seen as a film opening. I think I am just going to have to story board then find a suitable song so that I do not make the mistake of making a music video.

The definition of a music video: 'music video or song video is a short film integrating a song and imagery, produced for promotional or artistic purposes'

An example:

The definition of a film opening: 'The opening title sequence of a film is that film's opportunity to make a good first impression on you, the viewer. A well-crafted title sequence introduces the audience to the tone and theme of the film as well as the cast and crew.'

An example:

However now that I am looking at the opening scene to the Titanic, I think that my film opening will be ok because Titanic is silent and so is mine (but with some narration). I think that there is a confusion when a film opening is silent because it seem to a person that it is a music video however music videos have no dialogue when they get into it.

As a result, I am going to keep my song Smother by Daughter because of the reassurance on the opening scene to Titanic.

Friday 30 October 2015

Narration

I have completed my narration for my video. I have chosen to do the narration because as the girls are my age i believe that it fits well for it to have a girl voice and not my father's voice. There is room for improvement however, for example I will need to use a microphone in the real thing because the sound quality is not up to high standards. However it is a part and I am very pleased with it!

Story Boarding

I feel as if I need to have my music before I begin to story board. I think this will really help because then I can imagine what my characters will be doing and the different shots I can take. I have been looking at sound cloud and I think I have found my song. Tabitha was helping me also and she gave me a suggestion. She told me to listen to Smother by Daughter. As we are not aloud to copy right I have been listening to different covers made by people on sound cloud and I think I am going to choose  this cover.

Typical Synopsis

There are many different types of sub genre romantic films. I have picked three and I am going to go through each sub genre and give an example of each with the trailer to each movie.

Thriller

An example of a romantic thriller is 'Mr and Mrs Smith'. I have watched this movie so long ago so I am a bit rusty on it so I have taken the blurb from IMDb:

Plot Summery of 'Mr and Mrs Smith'

'A bored married couple is surprised to learn that they are both assassins hired by competing agencies to kill each other.' However they end up in love. The funny thing is that after this movie Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt ended up getting married and are still to this day - it was are a real romantic movie!

Actors
Brad Pitt

Angelina Jolie

Trailer to 'Mr and Mrs Smith'

Awards
The movie won 9 awards and was nominated for 17, more information about this can be found here

Other examples of romantic thrillers:

Comedy

An example of this is the movie called 'Blended'. This movie is one of my very favourites. Adam Sandler is an amazing actor and to me has a great sense of humour! Most of his movies are 'rom-coms', this being one of his latest movies. He just released a new movie called 'Pixels' which I have not seen but I have heard great things about it.

Plot summary of Blended

After having a monstrous date, Jim and Lauren agree to never see each other again. However they end up finding each other in a Safari in Africa with their children. They end up falling in love.
The film is very heart warming and so funny. I would really recommend it!

Actors

Adam Sandler

Drew Barrymore

Trailer to Blended:

Awards
I was surprised to find that most of the nominations that this movie got were very negative. However the movie had 11 nominations. More information about what these nominations were can be found here.

Some More Examples of Adam Sandler's RomComs

Crime

An example of a romantic crime film is in fact 'Date Night'. This movie can be seen as a thriller and crime sub genre of romantic films as it involves guns, drugs and hunting people down and all of these things are seen in both sub genres.

Plot Summary of 'Date Night'

'In New York City, a case of mistaken identity turns a bored married couple's attempt at a glamorous and romantic evening into something more thrilling and dangerous.'. The couple go through a lot through out the film, trying to get away from the bad guys and end up getting themselves out of the horrible mess that they got into.

Actors

Steve Carell

Tina Fey

Awards
This movie won 4 awards and was nominated for 7. More information about what these awards were can be found here.

Green Screen

Tab, Lizzy and I were playing around with the green screen. There was no really reason why we were playing with it, mostly to show off our skills. There could be a possibility that I will use the green screen in my film opening so doing this is really helpful as I know know how to do it.

Saturday 10 October 2015

Psychographic

I ask two girls in year 12 and one of my young female teachers to answer some questions for me. This was so that I could get to grips with what my demographic like. I asked them up to eight questions these where:

  1. What is your favourite type of music?
  2. What is your favourite film?
  3. Do you go to the cinema, if so who with?
  4. Where do you shop for your clothes?
  5. What are your hobbies?
  6. What is your favourite holiday destination?
  7. What perfume do you use?
  8. Who is your favourite actor/actress?
  9. What is your favourite TV show?
All of these questions helped me so much because I now know great ways in which to promote my film opening. It also shows me what teenage girls like and their hobbies. I can include these things in my movie opening. Overall this was very helpful.
Here is a video of the interviews that I conducted:

Thursday 8 October 2015

My treatment

A treatment is:
'A film treatment (or simply treatment) is a piece of prose, typically the step between scene cards (index cards) and the first draft of a screenplay for a motion picture, television program, or radio play.'
In this I had to include: my title for my movie opening, the log line, the plot, my demographic, psychographic and my key characters. This really helped me have time to think about my idea in more depth. It was really useful as now I know more about what I am going to do and who my target audience are, so now I can shaped my opening around this.
Here is a video of me giving my presentation:

This is my prezi that I made:

And this is my script I was reading from:

My treatment for my film opening

Working Title
I have chosen this title because it foreshadows one of the main characters future.
It as so symbolises the fact that the character have to gasp for air as their life is now going to be so hectic after they have be given bad news.

Log Line
What would you do if your partner were told that they had terminal cancer? That is what happened Margo, her wife Penelope was diagnosed with lung cancer. In a tragic story that tested their relationship and effected both of their lifes for the worst.

Plot
Un like most plots this one does not have an equilibrium because at the beginning of this plot Margo and Penelope are awaiting news from a doctor. The plot actually starts with the disequilibrium. The news turns out to be bad, as Penelope has been informed that she has terminal cancer. The couple struggle through the movie as they come across obstacles – one event causes another event (causality) this then leading to them being in agreement that they should split up, however neither of them really want to. But in a twist of fait they come to find each other along their paths a few months later. Margo has found a new relationship however wants to be there for Penelope for her last few days or weeks that she has left. Margo then ruins her new relationship and spends Penelope’s last few days with her. A few days later Penelope passes away leaving Margo devastated.

I would say that they climax is when the two reunite however there is not really a resolution as the plot ends with a sad ending. However, you could argue that them reuniting is the resolution.

Demographic
I think a suitable rating for this movie would be a 15. Our target audience would be both males and females however this genre may appeal to females because it is a romantic film.
It also may appeal to an older audience because of the maturity – the fact that it involves cancer and people being in love.
British Film spoken in English however it can be sold in countries that speak English or we could incorporate subtitles so that we can sell more copies.

Psychographic
We could promote the movie by posting adds on websites and places that girls go to.  Baring in mind our older audience, we could get posters outside supermarkets.
We could also place poster and adds in train stations around the UK especially big city’s London.

Key Characters
As I am just creating the first two minutes of this film I will to need as many character of actors as you may be thinking. The two key characters would be Margo and Penelope. I would also need a narrator to do the voice over at the beginning of the film. And lastly a doctor that presents the two women with the news. My idea so far is that the first two minutes will have no dialogue just music. This, I believe will make the opening much more emotional.

However everything is not set in stone but it is bringing us one step closer to out final goal (click slide). I hope you believe in this idea as much as I do and will support me in making this film!
