Case Study: Carol

My film is entered around a lesbian relationship. So I thought it necessary to see how lesbian films are marketed, produced and the nature of a lesbian film.

Carol is about an aspiring photographer that develops an intimate relationship with an older woman. 'A young woman in her 20s, Therese Belivet is a clerk working in a Manhattan department store and dreaming of a more fulfilling life when she meets Carol, an alluring woman trapped in a loveless, convenient marriage. As an immediate connection sparks between them, the innocence of their first encounter dims and their connection deepens. While Carol breaks free from the confines of marriage, her husband threatens her competence as a mother when Carol's involvement with Therese and close relationship with her best friend Abby comes to light. As Carol leaves the comfort of home to travel with Therese, an internal journey of self-discovery coincides with her new sense of space.'

The Film was released on the 20th of November 2015 and since then it is had $15.4 million in the Box Office. It is rated 7.6/10 on IMDb, 95% on Meteoritic, 94% on Rotten Tomatos and The Guardian have rated the movie 5/5. It is clear to see that they have done well!!

The film has been marketed in many ways. For example The Guardian had a piece by Rachel Cooke: 'Todd Haynes: 'She said, there's a frock film coming up with Cate attached.. it sounded right up my alley'. The article really promotes the movie as Todd Haynes is interviewed and says that 'it has no lead men' and 'Cate and Rooney are in every single frame'. This is really helping promote not just the movie but the LGBTQ community as a whole. The film is directed by Todd Haynes. The stars of the LGBTQ film are Cate Blanchett and Ronney Mara.

This is the trailer:

After watching this, I wonder, why is it such a big deal that there is a movie that is being made about two women. It is a thing, much like a man and a woman, why does it have to be such a big deal? It is who you love. I think that just because it is two women instead of a man and a woman, it won't change the emotions that we would feel. I guess this is my new generation-self talking but, hey it is just an opinion.
