Section B: Disney Facts

Section B: Institutions and Audiences
"Candidates should be prepared to understand and discuss the processes of production, distribution, marketing and exchange as they relate to contemporary media institutions, as well as the nature of audience consumption and the relationships between audiences and institutions."

To be able to answer a section B question I need to be prepared with facts to help my case. As a result, I have devised a few facts about Disney that will in turn help me compose a good essay.
  • In 2014 consumer products generated a revenue of nearly $4 billion
  • Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937) required  (a then-enormous) $1.499 million to produce the movie. However, it turned over a gross of $66 million, before reaching $185 million. Today Snow White has been rated in the box office in 10th place with a total of $885 million.
  • In 2013 Disney Studios exceeded $4 billion in the box office receipts, this was primarily thank to a contribution of $1.215 billion from Iron Man 3 and $744 million from Monster's University.
  • In 2015 Disney made $700 million each from: Captain America" The Winter Soldier, Maleficent and Guardians of the Galaxy.
  • FIRST BILLION: they exceed $1 billion in the global box office receipts from Pirates of the Caribbean" Dead Man's Chest, which reached $1.066 billion in 2006. Since then they have made more, including: Alice in Wonderland ($1.026 billion, 2010), Toy Story 3 ($1.063 billion), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides ($1.046 billion , 2011), Marvel's The Avengers ($1.519 billion, 2012), Iron Man 3 (1.215 billion, 2013) and
  • ($1.274 billion, 2013)
  • Pixar and Marvel have generated an estimate of nearly $3.4 billion profit for Disney.
  • Disney Infinity (2013) operating profit of $116 million in 2014.
  • Disney World is the company's largest resort, occupying 25,000 acres. It includes 800 campsites, 4 theme parks, 18 resort hotels, 23,000 rooms and 3,000 vacation club units.
  • Disney's largest and most profitable segment is Media Networks, which generated a revenue of $21.2 billion in 2014.
  • Disney's Media Networks not only include Disney Channels, but also: ABC Family, 80% in ESPN, 50% in A&E, The History Channel, Lifetime Movie Network and more...
  • It is predicted that Star Wars: The Force Awakens could make a gross of more that $2 billion worldwide!!!

Star Wars Marketing

Everywhere you look you can see star wars. Advertising, merchandise, interviews, the list goes on. In the led up to the most talked about film of 2015, all types of promotion and marketing have been made to keep the suspense up. In this blog I will show you over 10 different types of marketing that have been used to keep the convocation about Star Wars apparent in day to day life. The star wars saga is nearly 40 years old and has been around of 3 generation. Advertising Age said that "'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Tv Spend at $66 million and Rising".

So many different adverts on the telly have been designed to promote the film. Here are just some of the different ways people have been remained about the release of the film!

Clothes show

On the 5th December my school took us the the Clothes Show 2015, whist we were watching the show a storm trooper came out and started dancing. This was great because it brought about the movie, and reminded people of its realise.

XFactor Final 2015

Alan Carr - Chatty Man

Sky

On Sky there was a Star Wars channel, also there was a whole section just for Star Wars where viewers could watch all the Star Wars Saga at there own disposal for free. This helped with the hype of the movie as the audience was able to watch all the episodes before they watched Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Interviews

Many Interviews have been taken with the cast of the show. Some of these have aired on the television. This in tern helped people that watch these shows weekly to be reminded about the release of the movie. This interviews were broadcasted all over the world, this is possible because of the mass of money that the production company had to market the film.

Merchandise

Sales of star wars merchandise, ALONE, is excepted to reach up to $1.2-1.5 billion in the 12 months surrounding the film. As star wars have a huge demographic from hard core adult fans to little children wanting to get there hands on a alight saver, it will not be hard at all to each this number. As the film is being so advertised there is not one person that does not know about it's release. This has really helped as it makes the audience have constant reminders of the release of the movie. 15 weeks before the release of the film, disney introduced the star wars merchandise, even though 6/8 weeks is more common. There were so many hard core fans that had not even seen the movie yet, however they still brought all the merchandise, people just love Star Wars. Even though it is a big risk it seems to be working for Disney as they have made an estimated domestic total as of December 31 2015, of $651,965,583. Baring in mind the movie has been out for 14 days!!!

I watched Star Wars

Image result for star wars 7

Image result for star wars 7I have never actually watched any of the Star Wars movies but I have heard how amazing they are! So I was told by my mum and dad that we were going to watch the movie, so they told me to watch the last episode so tat I would understand it - it helped, a lot!

MAY I JUST SAY STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS WAS AMAZING!

It was so good, for someone that has not watch it before, it was emotional because of the return of many old characters, and spoiler alert, a surprise death!

Image result for star warsHowever, to be completely honest with you, if I was a super fan and I would have been camping out for days to watch this movie, I think that I would have been disappointed. It was not one of the best movies, apparently (I only watch Star Wars: return of the Jedi), it was not outstandingly amazing, but as a fan of the films I have watched I would watch it again!

When we were ordering the tickets online there were soon many showings, for example there was one at 3:00 in one screen, then another at 3:45 in another screen. That just shows how popular the film is. Meaning they are going to make millions!!

For example on the 29th December (12 days after the release date) there are 19 showing in one day! this shows the popularity of the film, and how well it has actually done because most films don't even get into cinemas!

My Film Opening

Today I filmed the rest of my moving opening. I can say I believe that all went to plan. Now all I have to do is edit the film. During the production of this opening I have encountered many problems; so far all of them have been dealt with. However, another has arisen.

The Hospital, that I choice to film my movie opening in, have proven a problem. The marketing sector have told me that I will be aloud to film in a hospital room if, and only if, it does not go onto any social media website. The Hospital made it clear that if I did post it to my blog or on YouTube, I will suffer serious consequences.

However, there was a light at the end of the, very dark, tunnel. My teacher informed the exam board and told them about the dilemma. They thankfully had a solution. This was to put my film opening on a DVD and send it to them so they can see it. Therefore, it will not be on a social media site. The hospital have also asked if they to can see a copy of the opening for marketing reasons, so I will also make a copy for them.

Here are the emails from my teacher and the exam board...

Filming skills I need to improve on

I was looking through my blog and I came across by preliminary task. As I watched it back it occurred to me that my filming for my 180 rule was incorrect. I know I have already evaluated by preliminary task, but as I am filming in less than a week I found it necessary that I knew how to film and how to improve.

When executing my 180 rule I have to ensure that when I am filming I film on the opposite sides of my actors shoulders or else it looks as if they are looking in the same direction. I made this mistake in my preliminary task, click here to view my video.
